How Does This Key Event Relationship Work
In mussels which brood their young internally to a larval phase (glochidia) and release them for further development within the gills of a host fish, many employ a technique of luring the host fish using mantel displays. Coloration, shape and movement of the mantel may mimic a prey item of the host fish. In some species, the mantel may trap the fish while the glochidia are released. Parturition (release) of the glochidia is triggered by the host fish's physical contact with the mantel (e.g., biting).
