Key Event Description
Increased pulmonary edema refers to the increased buildup of fluid in lungs due to injury, particularly damage to the alveolar epithelium layer leading to fluid leakage resulting in fluid buildup (Herrero et al. 2018).
How It Is Measured or Detected
Increased pulmonary edema is detected from histological examination. Clinically, chest x-rays, ultrasound, and other imaging techniques can be used.
Domain of Applicability
Life Stage: Applies to all life stages after development of lungs.
Sex: Applies to both males and females.
Taxonomic: Primarily studied in humans and laboratory rodents. Plausible for most mammals due to similar lung architecture.
Regulatory Significance of the Adverse Outcome
Pulmonary edema is an endpoint in OECD test guidelines (OECD 2018a, OECD 2018b, OECD 2024).
